garage sale find!!!

Whew! By golly it’s been a busy couple of weeks since I made it back here to you!!! The red.neck convoy is gearing up for the Parker County Peach Festival in Weatherford, TX as well as all the slight detours, u-turns and everyday wandering off to check out junk stores, flea markets and, well – anything else that might catch my eye (I’m not opposed to dumpster diving…)! It’s disgusting really…but so much fun!!!

A couple of weeks ago (or it could have been a few, but who’s counting?) in my wanderings I stumbled upon the “row-day-oh” drive of the red.neck world, the bright and shining star, the duct taped box at the end of the rainbow, the – okay, I’ll quit waxing poetic – a community wide garage sale! Oh my gosh, just when I thought I was done, there it was: ANOTHER garage sale sign! (And another one and another one…) I’m grinning in delight at just the fond memory of such a wondrous event!

And now for the rest of the story:

At one of the garage sales I wandered up the driveway, scanning the treasures on offer, trying SO hard not to show my shear excitement over what I had already loaded in my car, what had the potential to be loaded in my car (there was some real estate still available with some strategic maneuvering) when I see - IT. There IT is, amidst clothing cast-offs, neglected and calling my name (it could have been shrieking it, but that’s neither here nor there) shoved to the back of the rack as if it was not worthy of taking center stage as it so rightly deserved – the bathrobe of all bathrobes – the color combination you don’t see (well, you don’t see if you’re color blind…) - a truly hideous UH UHM – INTERESTING bathrobe – the future purse to beat all purses!

With baited breath I ask (heart pounding, palms sweating, quivering in excitement) “how much for this bathrobe?” The sweet lady looks at me and says…wait for it…wait for it… ONE DOLLAR! I have never whipped out a green piece of paper so fast!!! Then she says it…

That was my Mother’s robe, and she passed away a little bit ago. OH NO! She just said that to one of the most sentimental red.neck girls in the world! If it’s a piece of paper that someone important to me held on to, I hold on to it! With a deep DEEP breath I say, “I think I should tell you, I’m going to make a purse out of it, is that okay?” Then here it came (as I stood holding my breath and hoping not to turn blue)…

The biggest grin! She said that her mother would have LOVED that because she had been a really creative person, and that would have been right up her ally! I fairly FLEW from that garage sale (after explaining about red.neck Chic of course), hopped in my car, looked at my son (who at that point was truly disgusted by the amount of garage sales we had already hit, and the possibility that more might be around the corner…I obviously need to learn him some more ‘bout junkin’!) and went on my merry way (he could tell you exactly how many more stops we made on my merry way…)! Well, that Monday rolls around and I get a call at my shop and guess who it is! Bathrobe garage sale lady! She had been thinking since we had met and decided that she would like to have 3 purses for her Grand-daughters made out of THE bathrobe! Now, remember, she is telling this to one of the most sentimental red.neck girls you will ever come across…if it has history of ANY kind I’m all over it – so she comes in and what pattern does she pick out?

The original red.neck/in.di.vid.u.al objectse.liz.a.beth” bag – named after MY Grandmother! Cool, huh?! She had also brought along 3 concho’s off of one of her Mother’s belts, so those went on the bags too – all sewn up on MY Grandmother’s 1960 somethin’ Montgomery Ward sewing machine (I love that machine…)! I told you, sentimental. I had to make her a purse as a gift, but I left a spot empty for her to add one of her Mother’s brooches…you can’t carry an “e.liz.a.beth” without gettin’ your sparkle on!

One truly garage-saled out 14 year old boy…$5.00 (payoff not to roll his eyes and do the whole sullen “sigh” anymore – please tell me he is going to grow out of that!!!)

One truly….uh…. INTERESTING 1970 somethin’ bathrobe - $1.00

Family memories with a “red.neck” twist – PRICELESS!

Now I have to quit hitting the junk piles for a few days...(yep, okay - like THAT'S going to happen!) and get busy for my upcoming shows! Happy Junkin' - Talk to you soon!!!

oh...sparkly things...

I am a girl that loves bling. I am the purveyor of all things shiny and sparkly - the hoarder of anything that glistens or gleams (Crows and I seem to go head-to-head...if it's shiny and sparkly, I don't hesitate to knock 'em out of my way while reaching for it...) Doesn't matter where the bling is located! On my shoes, blouse, around my neck, in my ears, on my wrist, on my fingers (yes, I said fingers as in multiple bling locations), purses - i even have sparkles in my car paint. Bling is GOOD! Shine and Sparkle is BETTER! Vintage bling leaves me speechless due to the fact that my eyes are usually glassed over and I am prone to gasping and pointing with lustful desire. (If you ever see me in that state, please close my mouth and let me be.)

At the show in Ft. Worth a couple of weeks ago I sported sparkle and bling - courtesy of my new FAVORITE sparkly thing spot!!! I do believe I may now have a new lucky charm!

psssstttt.....you can't have this one, it's mine!!! whoo hoo!!! But Michele has plenty more! Unless I get there first, then we might have to go through the whole crow/knock-out routine...

With Spring being in full swing, the partly cloudy days and sporadic thunder storms have had me digging deep in the VAST bling and sparkle supply that has taken over my house...with my permission of course! Nothing can brighten your day up faster than a rhinestone, pearl or both (plus some more)! I will swear by this!!!

I am even guilty of doing big, dirty yucky jobs in sparkly things and heels...do you think it could be the red.neck in me? haha! I wonder if Shelley's South Shore Jewelry has a lucky charm for big yucky job days...

So I say - bring on the bling! Pile it on - layer it on - pin it on - slide it on - show off those rhinestones - raid your mother's jewelry box...oh wait, she reads this...don't let your mother catch you raiding her jewelry box - wear it with pride - let them see you coming!!! Go visit Michele!!!

Just watch for the red.neck and the crows....

Let Loose and Headin' North

Have you ever seen a modern day hill-billy headin' North on IH35 through Texas? If not, one could have been spotted last Friday morning! :-)

I loaded up my little car and hooked on a U Haul trailer full of old doors, ladders, the odd board or 6, wooden crates, a various assortment of other things and headed up to Ft. Worth for the Funky Finds Spring Fling! I'm fairly certain as I cruised along at the steady pace of 40mph (did I mention I have a tiny car and was pulling a U Haul trailer? I only got the bird shot in my direction a few times...) that I hummed really LOUD the Sanford and Son song a few times... I even did the finger clickin' thing! My Momma would be so proud!

What a GREAT success!!! red.neck Chic hit the Ft. Worth area with a resounding My sales were fantastic and the feedback was AWESOME!!! There are duct taped business cards and fliers sporting some more duct tape ALL over that area (and some surrounding ones too!!!)! I was in the presence of some awe inspiring talent as well!!! On one side I had "Loop+Lil", who had some ADORABLE children clothing and mobiles - and on the other side I had "Grubby Mitz Art Co" and "Blue Sky Sunburn" - two incredibly talented artists!

I couldn't help but think at one point that I hoped they didn't mind being parked beside a red.neck sporting an antler chandelier!!! Ah...now wouldn't you love to see that?!!? Just wait...

Anywho...I was across from "Modest Ambition" and "Manhandled" and I got to meet the brains behind "Pink Lemonade", "Pocket Full of Prettys", "AdaptivereUse"...I'm still swooning from all of the cool (and extremely talented) artists I got to meet!!! There are toooooo many to mention without driving you crazy!!! Here is a link to Joe and Jessica Dougherty's flickr page (whom I thank very much for including me!) and they have pictures of EVERYONE that was there...including the fabulous crowds!!!

And last but not least...here it is!!!

This booth was worth every minute of the TOOO many minutes it took to set-up and break down! Thank You Mike, Michelle and Mr. Aubrey for ALL of your help - and thank you to all of the vendors and customers that came to visit me!!!

Now, I have to get back into the laboratory - bwoo-ha-ha - (aka: sewing cave) to replenish my stock!!! Talk to you soon - Happy Junkin' and watch out for any hillbillies driving purple cars and towing U-Haul trailers...
