tablewear

the other day it was mentioned that i wear tablecloths. at first i was slightly traumatized....

then it was pointed out to me that i make pocketbooks out of tablecloths, why wouldn't i wear 'em too?

sew now i'm embracing my tablewear.

join me so i don't feel sew alone:

1 tank top
1 doily
sew the doily to the tank top
and.... if your tank is too long like mine is - cut some teeny-tiny holes in the sides (knit is SEW forgiving and doesn't unravel!), gather your shirt and tie it up with some hem lace.

it's that easy. and that summery. THAT pretty.

comin' to you LIVE from a single-wide where i should just accept the fact that the older i get, the more my inner hippie emerges. 9 times out of 9.5 i'm running around barefoot - i wear bell-bottoms all half the time... and tablewear, i'm sure, has a place setting in all of that. better yetif i go on a picnic i already have my table cover. simplicity in life is key...

cherry soup

google images

My throat feels like someone stuffed a roll of barbed wire down it... *dramatic pause*... or at the very least parked a dump trunk in it. Soup is on my mind 'cause chips hurt.

I read a recipe (yes, I read recipes... doesn't mean I cook!) for Chilled Cherry Soup using honey in it just a few days ago:

INGREDIENTS

1 1-pound bag frozen, pitted cherries
2 cups pinot noir
1 teaspoon lemon zest, chopped
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup honey
Cinnamon stick
1/2 cup water
Dash salt and black pepper
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1/4 cup water
Lemon or cherry sorbet (optional)

PREPARATION:

In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine cherries, wine, zest, sugar, honey, cinnamon stick, 1/2 cup water, salt and pepper. Stir to dissolve sugar and honey. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to simmer and reduce the liquid slightly, about 15 minutes.

In a small bowl, combine the cornstarch and 1/4 cup water. Whisk cornstarch mixture into cherry mixture and return to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered 10 minutes or until slightly thickened.

Remove soup from heat. Remove cinnamon stick from soup and place in bowl. Place fine-meshed strainer over bowl.

Puree soup in a blender, one cup at a time until smooth. Using a rubber spatula or back of a spoon to press out liquid, strain through fine-meshed strainer. Chill completely. Remove and discard the cinnamon stick. Serve soup with a scoop of lemon or cherry sorbet, if desired.

I have a teddy-bear bottle full of fresh honey that makes me smile. And I like cherries. And I always let my food get cold before I eat it. And PLUS: Troy with Junk Exchange said it was 101degrees here yesterday... that's crazy! It's only the first week of June! Chilled Cherry Soup sho' 'nuff sounds tasty.

Have you ever made cherry soup before?

comin' to you LIVE from a single-wide where I should also tell you that frozen cherries make your nose feel better after you drop a metal shelf on to the tip of it and it turns red like a cherry and then it looks like someone beat you up side the nose with a whisk. Or a blender. I don't think this is my week... who's cooking?

xoxo

Hugs and kisses or "xoxo" is a term used for expressing affection or good friendship at the end of a written letter, email or SMS text message. The common custom of placing X's on envelopes, notes and at the bottom of letters to mean kisses dates back to the Medieval Ages, when a cross was drawn on documents or letters to mean sincerity and honesty. A kiss was then placed upon the cross, by the signer, as a display of their sworn oath. It was also used in early Christian history as much of a display of the same. Since most of the common people were unable to read or write, the 'X' was placed on documents, and a kiss placed upon it as a show of their sincerity, gradually, as it was used so often, the cross was hurriedly drawn and often resembled an 'X'.

The 'O' is of North American descent, no one really seems to know how it was started. It has been said that when arriving to the US, Jewish immigrants would use an 'O' on documents, not using the sign of the cross, and shop keepers would often use an 'O' when signing documents, in place of an 'X'. Perhaps now it is used as the 'O' being rounded represents arms encircling another, as in an embrace.

The use of 'X' to signify a kiss dates back to as early as 1765.

One unambiguous example where x is used to represent "kiss" comes from a tragic event in 1905. A seaman aboard the doomed SS Kaliyuga managed to write this final message, where one x is used for each of the family members mentioned:

"Dear Father: Good-bye. I have a bank book in the Cleveland Society of Savings. Good-bye mother, dear sister and brother. xxxx A kiss for all."

This note was found on the body of oiler Charles Beaugrand which washed ashore several days after his ship sank during a late October storm on Lake Huron.

And NOW YOU KNOW! Good grief I have some fun with Wikipedia.

comin' to you LIVE from a single-wide where these two 24" squares of "awwwwww" are on their way to "the mercantile" in Hillsboro Antique Mall... how cool would they be for engagement photos? I'm gonna look and see what the three x's mean that are on the old moonshine bottles (not that I know about things like "moonshine" (whistles innocently))... I'll be back. hee-hee

who who who...

Harvard Grad students created a rotating mechanical tongue and concluded 3,127 licks.

Whoooooooo thinks spray paint is almost as magical as duct tape?

I doooooooo.....

Last night - around midnight - I heard an owl talking somewhere in my 'hood. I tried - REALLY HARD - to talk back to it, but each time I did I broke out in to side-splitting giggles. Apparently my Dr. Dolittle skillz are in need of Dr'n....
